BACKYARD POOLS: Backyard swimming pools can be attractive – and dangerous – to young children. In-ground and above-ground pools should be surrounded by a fence or other barrier. City Code requires a security fence of not less than four feet (4 ft) for swimming pools having a depth of two feet (2 ft) or greater. Even small inflatable pools should be protected. Pools that have an electric pump and filter systems create an extremely high hazard of electrical shock or electrocution if they are not installed according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions. All electric outlets and fixtures related to the pool must be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). It may be wise to check with your homeowner’s insurance policy to determine if claims regarding backyard pools are included in your policy.
