Are you considering raising chickens or ducks? The City of Solomon has local animal regulations on chickens and ducks. Read below for important information about the necessary permits and guidelines.
Permit Requirements
To maintain the harmony and health of our neighborhood, all domestic poultry, including chickens and ducks, require a permit. Here’s what you need to know:
- Get Your Permit: Apply for a permit before you bring any chickens or ducks home.
- Fee and Renewal: The permit costs $25 annually and is up for renewal each March.
Rules & Conditions
- Number of Animals: You can keep up to six hens per single-family dwelling. Please note, roosters are not allowed due to their noise.

- Inspections: Be prepared for city inspections of your premises to ensure compliance with the permit terms.
Consequences for Non-Compliance
- Initial Action: A warning letter will be issued for first-time violations.
- Further Non-Compliance: Persistent failure to comply will result in a citation with a fine of $60 plus $110 in court costs. Each day of non-compliance constitutes a separate offense.
Inspections Scheduled for Early June
City staff will begin chicken coop inspections the first week of June as part of the city’s permit compliance process. If you currently keep hens or ducks, please ensure your coop meets city standards ahead of time. These inspections are designed to be educational and supportive.
