Despite cooler-than-hoped-for weather, the City of Solomon Municipal Pool opened as scheduled on Saturday, May 24, with smiling faces, excited splashes, and a community ready to make the most of summer.

Temperatures hovered just above 70°, but that didn’t stop local kids from jumping right in — literally. Within the first hour, 15–20 swimmers showed up, eager to kick off the season.

“I wanted to jump off the diving board right away,” said Jordan Gray, a freshman at Solomon High School. “Being at the pool with my friends— it’s just a huge fun thing to do!”

Khloe Luna, also a freshman and celebrating her birthday on opening day, echoed that energy. “I just wanted to jump in!” she said with a laugh. “The water was cold, so I figured I might as well just get used to it. It felt amazing — just the nice cold water felt amazing!”

For many kids, the pool isn’t just a place to swim, but a centerpiece of their summer routine. “I come every day,” said Paul, a 7th grader. “It’s cool — you get to hang out with friends and do tricks!” His first move of the day? A backflip off the diving board. “Very cold!” he confirmed, grinning.

Eli Adkins, also a freshman, was one of the first to jump in. “I wanted to jump in with Jordan, Spencer, and Riley,” he said. “The water was cold, but it’s worth it to see everyone again.”

From the lifeguard chairs, staff felt the energy, too.

Andrew Gray, a returning guard and recent Solomon graduate, said, “It was great — even though it was cold, they jumped in with real excitement. I was glad to see everybody’s faces here.”

Emersyn Shirack, also returning this summer, shared, “I’m so glad to be part of the pool again. My favorite part is teaching swim lessons — it’s fun, and I love seeing all the kids’ faces come through the gate every day.”

City officials say this is just the beginning of what promises to be a full and fun season.

Mayor Brandy Gray shared, “Summer is an exciting time in Solomon, and our Municipal Pool is a great place to be! It’s more than just a place to swim — it’s where kids build confidence, families make memories, and neighbors come together. Whether you’re a child splashing through the day, an adult enjoying water fitness, or a family cooling off after work, we’re working hard to offer something for everyone.”

With extended hours, Family Fun Nights, swim lessons, private parties, and even water volleyball, Solomon’s pool is set to be a central hub of the community all season long.

Pool passes are still available and can be purchased at the pool or at the City Office. For details on hours, admission, and upcoming events, visit: https://solomon-ks.com/pool
