City of Solomon and Solomon United Festival Receive $800 grant for sound system

Exciting things are happening in Solomon! The Solomon United Festival Committee and the City of Solomon have partnered to secure an $800 grant from the Solomon Community Fund to help purchase a new portable sound system for Solomon City Park—a much-needed investment that will enhance sound quality for events year-round.

For years, organizers have struggled with limited audio equipment at public gatherings. “During the festival, the stage is a central hub for guests,” said Jill Duryea, a Festival Committee member. “Having a quality sound system will improve our guests’ experience and offers us more versatility with what entertainment we can offer.”

While the annual Solomon Festival was a major consideration in the request, the grant application also emphasized the system’s shared, multi-use value. The new sound equipment will also support events like Community Christmas and other community activities that take place in the park throughout the year.

“The grant paperwork was written as a true partnership between the City and the Festival Committee,” said Mayor Brandy Gray. “The shared use and broader community benefit were central to the project being selected for funding.”

Rather than continue to rely on rented DJ services and borrowed gear, the committee got strategic. With the City of Solomon serving as the fiscal agent and equipment caretaker, the grant helps cover the purchase of a professional Rockville DJ system—including microphones, speakers, stands, and accessories.

“The last few years, the committee has really been strong at raising funds and responsible with how the funds are used. It’s exciting to be able to plan and make things happen,” said Committee member Patty Prochazka.

The Solomon Community Fund echoed that enthusiasm. “This is exactly the kind of grassroots project our fund exists to support—something that brings people together, improves shared spaces, and reflects the pride people have in their town,” said Natalie Wood, Solomon Community Fund committee member.

The Solomon United Festival is built on a powerful mission: To create unity, companionship, and love for the community and encourage participation of all ages, denominations, and organizations on working together once a year towards one common goal—a better festival than the year before.

That mission is especially meaningful as the committee prepares for a major milestone. “Next year, 2026, will be the festival’s 50th anniversary,” Patty added. “Having this sound system is only one of a few exciting enhancements we’re striving for. Also on the list is repairing the park’s PA system and upgrading the stage, which is over 30 years old and just not functional for today’s entertainment needs.”
